Classic handheld electronic game re-creations
|
|
LEDhead is an open source project that simulates the classic electronic LED (light emitting diode) based handheld games of the 70's.
Now you can relive the excitement of your childhood years all over again! All games feature
fully authentic sound-effects, and faithfully (or at least I hope) replicate the game play of the
originals. There are currently plans to simulate all the commercially released games that were in
this series (see the full list here). I will be simulating new games as time allows.
Currently there are a versions of LEDhead available for Windows 9x/XP/Vista, PocketPC, and PalmOS handheld devices!
David Galloway ported the Football portion of LEDhead to the Atari 2600! A limited number of cartridges are being made available for sale for a nominal fee from AtariAge.

Why simulate these 20+ year old games that had, at best, only the crudest of graphics and sounds?
Without an effort to preserve these memorable games,
most or all of them would eventually fade into obscurity. Many already have.
It is my endevour to ensure these games are remembered into the future as the
culturally sigificant icons I believe they represent.
LEDhead is FREE, and full source-code is available under the GNU Public License.
Want to port this application to another platform? Contact me! I would love to see this on the Mac!

LEDHEAD MINI-FAQ
|
How much does it cost?
LEDhead is 100% free, and is distributed under the
GNU Public License.
I'm doing this for the love of it, and so should you. Remember,
free means FREE. Selling this program is strictly prohibited by
the license. That includes eBay. I'm watching you.
When are going to simulate <gamename>?
I am simulating the games as time allows, and in no particular order.
If the game is on the list (above), I'll get to it sooner or later.
Otherwise, I don't have any plans to simulate
it, at least not in this program.
If it's a game I like, chances are I'll probably get to it sooner.
Remember I'm doing this in my spare time.
I can't remember how to play <gamename>, can you help?
Yeah, it's amazing what 20 some years will do to your memory.
Fortunately, you can download the full instruction manuals for most, if not all, of these games
from the Handheld Museum (www.handheldmuseum.com).
The site also contains a wealth of other information.
Interesting program, but I want a real <gamename>.
Nothing beats the real thing, and I encourage you to pick up an original one of these classic items.
Take a trip over to
eBay's Handheld Game auctions.
You're just about certain to find what you're looking for. Be forewarned; some of
these items don't go for cheap.
Are you going to do a version of LEDhead for the Mac/Palm/Linux/etc?
I unfortunately do not currently have the resources to support additional plaforms.
However, the code has been designed for portability, so other platforms
should be easy. If you are a developer and wish to port the program, please
feel free to contact me. I would be glad to assist.
Do I need to download ROMs?
No. These games are highly accurate replications only.
They are not emulators and contain no proprietary code.
The Baseball "PRO-2" option does not work. Is this a bug?
Pro-2 is not currently supported for this game. Geez, isn't Pro-1 hard enough anyway??
When I run LEDhead (for PocketPC), I get the message "Cannot find LEDhead (or one of its components)." What's wrong?
You need to install Microsoft's GAPI.
See the note in the PocketPC download area below.
